Two diagonal lines divide this monochromatic ink drawing into wide bands of land, sea, and sky. The dense patterning of the ocean’s surface spills over the horizon line in a wave that appears to leap at the sun. A small figure in the foreground provides a scale for the scene, hinting at the enormous size of the distant wave.
