Vase Fragment: Dionysos and Satyr

Description

Fragment from a closed vessel, perhaps the upper right-hand corner of the figure panel of an oinochoe. A zig-zag pattern runs along the upper edge of the fragment, with a double line separating it from the figural scene. Dionysos holds a drinking horn and looks left toward a facing satyr. A stylized vine is in the background.

Note: Walton Brooks McDaniel gave a portion of his collection to the Department of the Classics in 1943 and the rest in 1946. The Collection is named for his late wife, Alice Corinne McDaniel. As noted in non-comprehensive list of McDaniel objects dated October 25, 1946, McDaniel purchased this sherd on October 30, 1920 in Civita Castellana.
