Purchased from the sculptor by Mrs. Mary Longfellow Greenleaf (sister of the poet), 1870. Descended in family to daughters (Miss Alice M. Longfellow, Miss Lucia W. Longfellow, and Mrs. Annie Longfellow Thorp) of the sitter, 1902. Their gift to Harvard University 1903.
